At 13 months old, Tommy officially became a toddler! On July 31, he took his first steps. By August 2, he was walking across the room. Then he took off running and hasn't stopped since!
This month, he sprouted FIVE new teeth! (4 lateral incisors on the top and bottom and his first molar on the top left). This brought out a whole new side of his personality with little angry outbursts that included throwing himself on the floor and sprawling out his arms and legs like a starfish, arching his back and throwing his head backward, and banging his head against the wall. And whining... lots and lots of whining! Along with the teething, he also became even more attached to his pacifier. But he knew how to use it correctly- when he would start getting irritable, he would grab the paci and shove it in his mouth to calm himself down. He would also use it as a teether to help soothe his sore gums. And he ate A LOT of popsicles!

Along with all of the nonstop running around came an insatiable appetite. He would eat adult-sized portions at mealtime and wanted to eat snacks all day long. He especially appreciated a big breakfast- waffles, sausage, toast, scrambled, eggs, potatoes, bacon... he loved it all! His favorite breakfast was a scramble with eggs, bacon or sausage, onions, potatoes, mushrooms, and cheese. Some other favorite foods this month were chicken, chili, pears, brocolli, and Cheez-its. This month, he was down to only drinking a bottle of milk at the end of the day before bed.

His favorite word this month was "more!" (pronounced "mmmmah!"). This was his go-to command when he wanted to eat (which was basically all hours of the day). He would start shouting "more!" while there was still food in his mouth because he would already be anticipating the next bite. Sometimes he would also yell "more" if he didn't want to stop doing something (wanted to play more, splash in the water more, etc.) He was also really good at letting us know when he did not want something. He would shake his head about 10 times very dramatically to be sure we got the message. He started saying "thanks" (pronounced "geeeees") when we would give something to him or when he gave something to us. He would smile and wave and say "nah nah" (which meant "hello," "goodbye," and "night night.") He would say "go!" if we said "1, 2, 3..." or "ready, set..." and he would say "up" when he wanted to be picked up.
When he first started walking, his new sense of indepedence expanded into everything he did. He wanted to do EVERYTHING by himself! He no longer wanted to be cuddled or rocked to sleep, he refused to hold anyone's hand when he walked, and he would rather push the stroller (or shopping cart) than ride in it. He wanted to hold his own bottle, close doors by himself, and feed himself with a fork or spoon. During diaper changes, he would get up and run away as soon as his diaper was off. Then he would run around the house laughing until he got caught and would throw a fit when we tried to put his diaper back on.

Some of his favorite things to do this month were: going on walks, splashing in water (especially toilets!), running through fountains, chasing his cousins, playing Fisher Price apps on the iPad/iPhone, dancing, playing with rocks, going for car rides, unloading the dishwasher, and digging in dirt, sand and bark. He also became very attached to his little plush puppy blanket from Auntie Sarah and wanted to carry it around with him everywhere and sleep with it every night. His big adventure this month was taking a two week trip out west to go to his mommy's cousin Alexa's wedding and visit both sides of the family. He was great on the airplane- he slept, ate snacks, and watched Elmo's World on the iPad. It was a very busy and eventful month for Thomas Jay!
